Sheffielders urged to take part in obesity study
Specialists behind a cutting edge obesity study in Sheffield are appealing for 100 overweight people in the city to come forward and take part in the trial. Dave Birds, the health and fitness expert leading the study at Concord Sports Centre, will be hosting an open day at the Shiregreen venue on Saturday 16 August with researchers from Sheffield Hallam University to explain the details of the trial.
Participants will qualify to take part in the scheme depending on their body mass index (BMI) and will be put through their paces over 12 weeks. The study aims to determine whether naturally produced serotonin makes people react differently to exercise. Dave, who himself shed 12 stones to become a qualified advanced fitness instructor and GP referral consultant at the venue said: “We’re inviting everyone down to Concord who thinks they may be overweight or obese and are interested in doing something about it. “We have a great chance here to be part of a significant breakthrough in understanding the causes of obesity and I think it is wonderful that we can make a difference in Sheffield.” The open day at Concord Sports Centre begins at 9am until 1pm on Saturday 16 August and is free for anyone to attend. For more information contact Concord Sports Centre on 0114 257 0053 or visit www.concordsportscentre.co.uk.
