The African Continent will soon be wearing the colours of Sheffield’s football clubs with the help of two of the City’s leading sports centres.
Concord Sports Centre in Shiregreen and Westfield Sports Centre in Sothall, have come together to kick off a Jumpers for Goalposts initiative.
They are encouraging visitors to donate football shirts to the scheme in return for a 25 per cent discount off the cost of hiring the Astroturf or 3G outdoor pitches at Concord Sports Centre or Astroturf outdoor pitches at Westfield Sports Centre.
The scheme runs until September and is open to all ages. Each visitor only needs to donate one shirt per booking.
After the scheme has ended, the shirts will be delivered with the help of the RAF who take donations over to Africa.
Steve Culf, general manager of Westfield Sport Centre, which is operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), said: “After the World Cup everyone has got football fever so not only is it a great use of sport to help people in Africa, it’s also a chance for people to enjoy the sporting facilities of Sheffield at a discount price. It is also in keeping within the themes of the World Cup, by leaving a legacy behind for the people of the host country.”
